The very best in BBQ will be invited to compete at this unique competition on December 13th, 2014. The King of the Smoker competition will be located at the beautiful La Quinta Resort & Club in La Quinta, CA and will feature some of the top names in BBQ. 24 big BBQ names will be competing for $50,000 and the title of, “King of the Smoker.”
Pig skin bbq (also sometimes known as "swine assassins") has been competing for over 5 years. This tightly-knit family team is made up of scott and katy nelson, along with their five children gavin, chloe, ben, valerie, and lucas. Pig skin bbq have won such prestigious awards as grand champion at the 2012 jack daniels world championship, and reserve grand champion at the 2013 king of the smoker.
Altogether, SMBBQ has 3 grand championships, four reserve grand championships and thirteen category wins. Steph Franklin aka "The Genie" is the award winning BBQ chef/owner of Simply Marvelous BBQ catering & spice rub seasoning company. Steph uses a fusion style of cooking developed from his travels throughout the United States, Mexico, and The Caribbean. Through his wanderings he had the opportunity to sample a wide array of flavor combinations, which inspired him to develop his own product line of rubs, seasonings, and sauces. He began marketing his blends under the "Simply Marvelous BBQ" name in 2008 and is known throughout the national and international BBQ communities. In his spare time, Steph competes in the professional BBQ circuit. Feeding his competitive spirit, he has successfully participated in competitions across the country, from California to New York. In October 2012, SMBBQ began to take it to the next level, winning his first grand championship. Since then, SMBBQ has acquired two additional grand championships and three reserve grand championships. Currently competition teams across the country are enjoying great success using the "West Coast Offense" flavor profile an award winning combination of Simply Marvelous and Big Poppa Smokers rubs.
Hailing from Taylorville, IL gilly's bbq is solely run by gil taft (unless he is forced to deputize a box runner.) mr. Taft started cooking in 2007 doing several backyard contests and did his first kcbs competition at arthur,il. The next year he competed in 17 contests and had his first gc and went to the american royal world series of bbq. In the past two years gilly's bbq has finished in the top 10 in the kcbs team of the year.
Wine Country "Q" is a husband and wife competition bbq team from duvall, washington. It was born out of two passions: rhana mcgee's passion for wine and traveling the wine regions of the world, and john "jd" mcgee's passion for bbq. The idea was simple: travel & and eat! Competition bbq seemed like the perfect hobby to satisfy both passions. They teamed up in 2011 and took the local competition bbq circuit by storm winning 7 grand championships and 1 reserve grand championship as well as the pacific northwest bbq association's 2011 "team of the year". 2012 and 2013 brought more success for wine country q winning 10 grand and 6 reserve grand championships along with pnwba "team of the year" for their third consecutive season. And they're not done yet...
Big T'z Q cru is led head cook, ryan newstrom. Big t'z are a family team from ames, iowa that began competing in 2009. While many friends and family join them for competitions, the main team members consist of ryan, his wife sonya newstrom and her dad daniel stoltze. Out of the four years that they have been competing big t'z has been the iowa bbq society team of the year three of those years.
Smokey D's BBQ was founded in 2006 by Darren and Sherry Warth in a trailer in their driveway. Their success on the competition BBQ circuit yielded multiple requests from friends and businesses for caterings of smoked meats. Both with full time jobs the catering operations quickly became overwhelming. In 2007 they partnered up with Chef Shad Kirton and his wife Angie to open their first carryout BBQ and catering operation. With an overwhelming response from customers in 2008 they opened up a remote location in the skywalk system in downtown Des Moines. Smokey D's has become known as Central Iowa's place for Championship BBQ. Both owners compete against each other on the BBQ circuit and have a won a combined 600+ Category awards and over 40 State BBQ Championships including Darren and Sherry winning the 2013 American Royal Open, 2013 Kingsford Invitational, and the 2014 Jack Daniel's Invitational.
Swamp Boys BBQ is a Winter Haven FL based professional barbecue cook team. I began competing as a "pro" in 2004, was a Top 5 team in the Florida BBQ Association (FBA) in 2006 and 2007, was Team of the Year in 2008 and 2009, and have been in the top 3 since then. We were ranked the #1 team in the country for 67 straight weeks, including all of 2009, by the National BBQ Rankings. We compete primarily in the southeast - FL, AL, GA, SC, NC and TN in both FBA and KCBS contests. We have won 43 Grand Championships and 33 Reserve Grand Championships. We won the World Championship in Pork Shoulder. I was hired to go to Brazil on 2 different occasions to train and help open that country's first ever American-Style Barbecue restaurant. I have taught professional BBQ classes from FL to IL to over 120 people from all over the country and Canada. I've been a spokesman for Kingsford Charcoal at the Daytona Firecracker 400 and the Steve Harvey Show. We've been selected to compete in Season 4 of the TV show BBQ Pitmasters. There are many more honors. But to sum it up, we've been blessed.
One2bbq is based out of New Berlin, IL. Formed in 2009 the team consist of Steve Hayden and Mike Gillespie. In that time we have won 14 Grand Championships and 16 Reserve Grand Championships. We are currently ranked 5th in the KCBS TOY and and finished 4th runner up in the 2014 American Royal Invitational.
QUAU consists of Mike and Beth Wozniak who live on a grain farm in central Illinois. We have 3 children, Max and Hannah at home, and Andrea DeRenzy and her husband Luke of Elmwood, Illinois.

The 2013 King of the Smoker Champions, TippyCanoe BBQ Crew is a championship competition BBQ team based in St. Ansgar Iowa. Founded in 2008, they compete in Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned contests all over the country. In 2011 Team Tippy was crowned National Champions at the Inaugural Sam's Club National BBQ Tour and Grand Champions of the "World Series of Barbecue" American Royal Invitational. Since hitting the competition trail in late 2008 they have won over 12 Grand Championships, 10 Reserve Grand Championships, and hundreds of category and overall top 10 awards.
Sweet Swine O' Mine established 1996. Two time World Grand Champion BBQ team out of Memphis, TN. In 2013 and 2009 we were honored to be named the Grand Champions at the Memphis In May World Champion BBQ Cooking Contest . We have been named World Champions in Shoulder at Memphis In May four times: 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2013. We also placed 2nd in 2007 and 3rd in 2010.
3 Eyz BBQ was formed in 2006 in Maryland and has been tearing up the competitive BBQ circuit ever since. The team has traveled across the United States and competed in over 140 Sanctioned BBQ contests racking up an impressive list of awards. As of November 2014, the team has won over 23 Grand Championships, 19 Reserve Grand Championships, over 400 top ten awards and a perfect score in ribs at the 2012 Jack Daniels World Championship. Our biggest achievement is being crowned the: 2012 Kansas City BBQ Society's (KCBS) 2012 Team of the Year!
A husband & wife BBQ Team competing in the KCBS BBQ circuit. They don't have a restaurant, (and they don't want one!). They have a great time traveling, competing, and meeting new friends along the way.
It all started with my father-in-law giving me a homemade Fall City Beer Keg Grill in about 1983. A friend and I went to his father's pig farm to kill and slaughter our very first hog. Although this was a small hog, it was hard to cook on a beer keg! Coming up with our own cuts of meat turned out pretty good; smokin', chillin' and grillin' became my passion! Travis Clark has always enjoyed cooking and plans on competing with his wife, Kimberly. Getting started right learning from Rod Gray from Pellet Envy, Clark Crew BBQ has made a big splash on the BBQ circuit.
With sixty-three Grand Championships and countless category wins to his name Johnny Trigg of Smokin' Triggers has cooked over 600 events during his long, storied BBQ career. With his wife Trish at his side, Johnny began competing in 1990. From his home base in Alvarado, Texas, he has logged hundreds of thousands of miles, competing in nearly all the U.S., and even parts of Europe. National Champions in 2003, Smokin' Triggers has also placed as that coveted award's runner up twice. In addition, he's nabbed the Kansas City Barbeque Society category Team of the Year winner multiple times. With victories in 2000 and 2003, Johnny is the only two time Jack Daniel's World Invitational Champion. But his biggest trophy of all, physically, has to be the full dress Harley Davidson Ultra Classic motorcyle awarded him for winning the L P Que in 2007. And his most cherished prize? The $50,000 purse won on national television during Kingsford's BBQ Pitmasters Season 3. In addition to that memorable career moment, Johnny will never forget a USO-sponsored mission to Kuwait, where he and five fellow pitmasters fed authentic BBQ to over 5,000 US military troops in Kuwait. Feared most by fellow competitors for his award winning ribs and brisket, Johnny, "The Godfather of BBQ," remains the oldest active competitor in barbecue, and has no intention of slowing down anytime soon.
The Shake 'n Bake Team consists of Pitmaster Tim, his wife Terri, who makes up the turn-in boxes and participates in the extra side categories for fun, and of course the Shake 'n Bake girls (as they are affectionately known) Tatum and Taylor, who have become quite the tasters, as well as many other friends and family that help throughout the season. Tim and Terri have also both become KCBS Certified BBQ Judges. Over the past few years, Tim has racked up many ribbons and trophies including 1st place awards in each category of Chicken, Ribs, Pork, and Brisket.

They grew up calling each other, "truebud," and that's how the team name was formed.
Lucky's Q started competing in KCBS sanctioned events in 2010 with partaking in 5 that year. Justin (head cook) made a smoker out of a 55 gallon air compresor tank and him and his wife (Kate) hit the road. Once the first ribbon was received, they were hooked. As a whole they have just over 60 contests under their belt in their short career. In 2011 they received their first GC in Owatonna, Minnesota which in return let them get their bung pulled for the Jack Daniels Invitational. In between the time of their first GC and The Jack, they had their first child, Gavin. He got started early and was at his first contest when 8 days old, and by the time he was 2 months he had been in 5 states (all due to BBQ).
Smoke Me Silly Competition BBQ Team is from Madison, Alabama, and consists of Husband and Wife team Robert Vanderipe and Lex Vanegas. Currently in the top 5 overall team standings in the nation!
It is only natural that one of the country's top barbecue competitors hails from Kansas City - the city best known for its barbecue. Competing since 2001, Rod Gray, Pitmaster for Pellet Envy, has participated in 397 events from coast to coast. In that time, Pellet Envy has won seventy-nine championships and has ended ten straight seasons as a top nationally ranked team. Since 2006, Pellet Envy has more wins than any other team in America. Following up as the national champion in 2009, Rod Gray of Pellet Envy was the runner-up national champion in 2010 and has been named the best pork ribs cook and brisket cook in the entire country. Additionally, Rod has competed in the Jack Daniel's World Invitational Championship seven times in his short career. All while educating the public and promoting barbecue as America's only true cuisine, Pellet Envy has been awarded more perfect scores in competition barbecue than any other four teams combined.

When little pig town started cooking in 2008, it was originally scot kee and a friend. But by the time the team's first year was over, scot's wife and daughter were coming to most contests; eventually, his wife daughter started cooking with scot in 2009 and it has been that way ever since. Little pig town has been to the jack once and finished 4th overall. Since 2008 they have earned over 12 reserve grand championships, and over 20 grand championships.
Blazen BBQ, Ronnie & Michelle Wade, from Texas, have been competing since 1999.
They hold 135 career Grand Championships.
This year, they cooked 46 events, six states, earning 10 Grand Champions, 8 of those qualifiers.
In 2014 they earned their sixth IBCA Cooker of the Year award and are currently in second place for 2015.
